Our approach

Comfort first. Energy savings come along for the ride.

Most homeowners come to us about energy efficiency because the house feels cold near the windows in winter. The drafts, the cold spots on the couch by the window, the condensation on the glass, those are comfort problems first and energy problems second.

Modern double-pane Low-E windows solve the comfort issue almost completely. Triple-pane is overkill for most coastal Humboldt homes (we're not Minnesota), but for exposed sites with high winds, it can be worth it. We'll help you pick the right level of glazing for your situation.

What's included

Every energy-efficient window replacement project covers the full scope.

Pricing varies by project size and material, but the scope below is standard. We don't unbundle the parts that protect the house.

01

Energy assessment

Walk the house, identify which windows are losing the most heat, and recommend a phased replacement plan if you don't need to do everything at once.

02

Glazing selection

Double-pane is standard. Low-E coating is non-negotiable. Triple-pane and inert gas fills (argon, krypton) for specific exposures.

03

Frame selection

Vinyl is most thermally efficient at the frame. Fiberglass is comparable. Wood-clad has slightly higher U-factor but better aesthetics. We'll explain the trade-offs.

04

Air sealing

The biggest energy gain is often air sealing around the frame, not the glass itself. We use closed-cell foam or backer rod and caulk depending on the gap.

05

Install & finish

Square install, proper flashing, exterior trim integrated with the siding. Interior finish work or coordination with your finish carpenter.

06

Documentation

ENERGY STAR certifications and U-factor specs documented in case you're applying for utility rebates or tax credits.

Scope
Energy-Efficient Window Replacement
Location
Humboldt County, CA

A whole-house energy upgrade where we opened up the walls, replaced failing single-pane windows with double-pane Low-E units, added fresh insulation around every rough opening, and put it all back together with proper flashing. The energy savings come from the combination, not from the windows alone. This is what an energy retrofit actually looks like in progress.

Common questions

Energy-Efficient Window Replacement, answered.

Specific questions about your project? Send them our way.

How much will I actually save on heating?
Depends on what you're replacing. Single-pane windows being replaced with modern double-pane Low-E typically reduce heat loss through the windows by 30 to 50%. Whole-house savings depend on how leaky the rest of the house is.
Do I need triple-pane windows in Humboldt County?
Usually no. Coastal Humboldt isn't cold enough for triple-pane to pay back its premium. Double-pane Low-E with argon fill is the sweet spot for most homes here.
Are there rebates or tax credits available?
Sometimes, the federal energy efficiency tax credit applies to ENERGY STAR-certified windows in many cases. Local utilities occasionally offer rebates. We'll point you at current programs but you'll need to confirm eligibility yourself.
Will new windows fix my condensation problem?
Often yes, if the condensation is forming on the inside of the glass (a sign of poor insulation). If it's between panes, the seal has failed and the window should be replaced. We can diagnose during a site visit.
